Fueling a New Energy Reality

At Bio Blue, we believe the future of clean energy is not only electric – it’s also circular.

Renewable biomethane is a cornerstone of Europe’s energy transition, delivering the essential molecules where electricity cannot reach.

While wind and solar constitute the backbone of renewable power generation, they are heavily dependent on external factors — especially the weather — limiting their ability to meet Belgium’s and Europe’s ambitious climate goals. Hydrogen, meanwhile, remains costly and energy-intensive to produce.

Biomethane, in contrast, offers a reliable, cost-effective, and controllable source of renewable energy. It fills the gap left by electricity and hydrogen, enabling the decarbonization of hard-to-electrify sectors such as heating, heavy industry, and transport.

Recognizing this, both federal and regional strategies identify biomethane as a key pillar on the path to net zero. As Belgium works toward the EU RED III target of 47% renewable energy by 2030, Bio Blue delivers the renewable gas that strengthens energy security and ensures a balanced, resilient energy mix.

Redefining Waste Through Circular Innovation

We are on a mission to transform organic waste from farms, food & feed industries and communities into renewable energy, reusable carbon, and natural fertilizer.

Our integrated process captures every molecule of value — producing clean biomethane, biogenic CO₂, and soil-enriching fertilizer that closes the nutrient loop.

By harnessing advanced technology with local resources, Bio Blue turns waste into opportunity and circularity into measurable climate impact.

Once fully operational, our facilities will generate enough biomethane to heat over 100,000 homes each year, cutting carbon emissions equivalent to planting and maintaining more than 25 million trees.

    Laviedor processes manure and other products into soil conditioners and fertilisers.

    B.A.T. France is founded to trade the end products of Laviedor into the French market.

    Foundations

    Company inception: Bio Blue is founded by BAT Services (68%) and Bart & Michael de Lathauwer (32%). BAT Services, founded in 1997, specialises in collecting, processing, and valorising organic and industrial by-products using advanced technologies. Biogas plant acquisition: Bio Blue takes over 50% of the original biogas plant, including the composting business (the Biomass Centre).

    Full ownership

    Bio Blue acquires 100% of the biogas plant.

  • Laviedor 33

    B.A.T. Services acquiers 33% participation in Laviedor

    2013

  • Rebuild

    Bio Blue demolishes the old plant, continues production, and rebuilds a state-of-the-art facility over 2–3 years.

  • Electricity to Grid 2

    Electricity-to-Grid

    April: Bio Blue puts electricity on the grid for the first time.

    2021

  • Biomethane to grid

    Biomethane-to-Grid Conversion

    December: Bio Blue injects biomethane into the grid for the first time. The plant processes 90,000 tons of feedstock per year and produces 80 GWh biomethane annually, with potential to increase production to 100 GWh by 2027. The plant produces electricity and heat for its own operations. In addition, Bio Blue produces over 45,000 tons of biofertilisers and compost per year by mixing digestate with green municipal waste in a separate composting facility on site.

    Expansion plans

    Bio Blue prepares a new flagship biomethane-to-grid plant in the Port of Ghent with a capacity of 500 GWh/year.

    fully operational

    Bio Blue's new Flagship Biomethane Plant in the Port of Ghent with a yearly capacity of 500 GWh is now fully operational.

    Expansion - Bio Blue Ieper

    Bio Blue is planning to double its capacity in Ieper by building 4 extra digesters on the adjacent land strip, increasing its biomethane production to 200 GWh per year and producing over 90,000 tons of bio-fertilisers and compost.

    Plans include the doubling of Bio Blue Ghent’s capacity. It is our goal to eventually produce about 1,000 GWh per year at this site.

    Bio Blue has partnered up with Aceites Sierra Sur and is looking into opportunities to build a biomethane plant in the area of Granada in Spain.
